Knives Out

Best movies on Binge: Knives Out

Alex's analysis: A gloriously fun take on the whodunit genre

Alex's rating:

After the apparent suicide of a wealthy 85 year old mystery novelist, private detective Benoit Blanc - played by Daniel Craig - is called in to investigate. Equal parts murder mystery and dysfunctional family drama, Knives Out is a laugh out loud hilarious take on a classic genre that both embraces and subverts its tropes. Just try not to enjoy this wild ride - Alex Choros

Eagle vs. Shark

Eagle Vs Shark

Anula's notions: A love story, wrapped in a revenge plot and garnished with oddity upon oddity.

Anula's rating:

It's not for everyone, but the blend of Napolean Dynamite-esque and Flight of the Concords styles make for a unique rom-com with flare. Taika Waititi absolutely nails his token style, of telling tragedy and comedy all at once. There are no emotion-filled monologues, or meet-cutes, or grand romantic gestures but there is revenge, windbreakers and animal costumes. Jarrod and Lily's story is problematic, actually they're both just problematic people but it looks like everyone has someone out there... I guess - Anula Keenan

Director: Taika Waititi | Cast: Jermaine Clement, Loren Horsley, Craig Hall, Joel Tobeck | Language: English | Rating: M

Hunt for the Wilderpeople

Jacqui's gist: Sam Neill and Julian Dennison become unlikely outlaws in this flawless Kiwi comedy.

Jacqui's rating:

When juvenile delinquent Ricky Baker and his grumpy Uncle Hec head out bush for a few weeks, a misunderstanding with some campers forces them to go on the run. The two quickly become the focus of a police manhunt and have to rely on their wits - what few there are between them - to survive. The result is a hilarious misadventure in the New Zealand wilderness filled with camping and car chases and the occasional wild boar. A must-see for lovers of quirky comedy - Jacqui Dent

Clueless

Clueless

Anula's notions: 90's mean girls.

Anula's rating:

Cher is rich, popular, influential and a grade A bitch. She decides that a social makeover on the new kid, and matchmaking teachers is the best form of charity that she can muster. Along the way her own status is challenged, causing her to reassess her life and values. It's a surprisingly humbling, if not problematic-at-times tale that was required watching for every teen born in the 90s. - Anula Keenan

Director: Amy Heckerling | Cast: Alicia Silverstone, Brittany Murphy, Paul Rudd and Stacey Dash | Language: English | Rating:

The Shining

The best movies on Binge - The Shining

Jacqui's gist: The classic tale of man meets haunted hotel, man goes crazy, man tries to kill family. Hey, it could happen to anyone.

Jacqui's rating:

There's a reason why The Shining still remains one of the most iconic horror movies of all time. Three reasons, actually: Jack Nicholson, Stanley Kubrick and Stephen King. Put them together and you get a slow burn, brooding masterpiece that's still genuinely creepy nearly forty years later. Jack Nicholson stars Jack Torrance, a struggling writer who moves his family to an isolated hotel for his job as the winter caretaker. It soon becomes clear that the hotel is evil and it's having a strange effect on Jack. The rest is pretty much history - Jacqui Dent

Director: Stanley Kubrick | Cast: Jack Nicholson, Shelly Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers, Barry Nelson | Language: English | Rating: MA15+

The Social Network

The Social Network

Alex's analysis: Come for the bangin' Trent Reznor soundtrack, stay for one of 2010's best movies.

Alex's rating:

Aaron Sorkin's sharp writing doesn't make Zuckerberg any more likable, but this David Fincher directed take on the birth of Facebook (and the ensuing lawsuits) is far more interesting than it has any right to be. Even if the film may take some liberties with the subject, The Social Network is nonetheless a must watch - Alex Choros

The Mummy

The Mummy

Jacqui's gist: Brendan Fraser alone should be enough to sell you on this movie. The action, laughs and horror capers are just an amazing added bonus.

Jacqui's rating:

If you haven't watched The Mummy yet, you've got to get onto that. It's got Brendan Fraser. It's got Rachel Weisz. It's got monsters, adventure, a villain who looks exactly like the main guy from Aqua, and more sharp lines than you can shake a stick at. Sure, it may be light on historical or even biological accuracy. But if you're the type of person who'd choose flesh-eating scarab beetles over 'reality', this movie is for you - Jacqui Dent

Anula's rating:

You acca-believe it's worth spending 90 minutes of your life watching this movie. Check out every female stereotype, hilariously over exaggerated, and crammed together as an acapella singing sensation. Oh and Rebel Wilson is there. Get set on your couch for some horizontal running. - Anula Keenan

The Lighthouse

The best movies on Binge: The Lighthouse

Alex's analysis: A slow descent into madness, as a treat

Alex's rating:

The Lighthouse is a tense slow burn of a psychological horror following two lighthouse keepers - Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe - on the edge of sanity. Shot in black and white and 4:3, The Lighthouse not only emulates the feel of Hitchcock era horror, but the look. It's a surreal assault on your senses, and relishes in making you uncomfortable. All in all, a great time. If you're into that - Alex Choros

Director: Robert Eggers | Cast: Robert Pattinson, Willem Dafoe | Language: English | Rating: MA15+

Zombieland

Zombieland

Jacqui's gist: Do they take the zombie apocalypse seriously? Not really. Do they kick undead arse? Hell yes, they do.

Jacqui's rating:

What would happen if Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin were the last survivors of the zombie apocalypse? The answer is Zombieland

This is the story of an unlikely band of misfits driving across America killing zombies and looking for twinkies. They smash up a gift shop, argue over the best Zombie Kill of the Week and meet Bill Murray, who plays himself in one of film history's greatest cameos. The movie also provides plenty of useful tips on how to survive the zombie apocalypse. Educational and hilarious. Who could ask for more? - Jacqui Dent

Galaxy Quest

Best movies on Binge - Galaxy Quest

Anula's notions: Ever wondered how sci-fi actors would actually go if their adventures were in reality? Now you don't have to.

Anula's rating:

Seriously if you haven't seen Galaxy Quest you really should. A stellar comedic cast of Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman play actors in a cult sci-fi TV series. As the remnants of their fandom wane and relationships turn sour, it turns out an alien race has been watching all along. An alien race who doesn't understand that the TV show is fiction and have come across the galaxy to beg these 'heroes' to save them. Now these washed up actors are left to save a world when they couldn't even save their show - Anula Keenan

In Bruges

Best movies on Binge - In Bruges

Jacqui's gist: Two Irish hitmen hide out in an idyllic Belgian holiday town, and the result is chaos.

Jacqui's rating:

Usually when a movie walks the line between comedy and drama, it's possible to err definitively on one side or the other. It's either a dramedy, or it's a comedy with some bits that aren't so funny. With In Bruges, it's impossible to choose. This is one of those rare movies that manages simultaneously to be moving and hilarious. But the jokes don't cheapen the feels, and the feels don't take away from the laugh-out-loud jokes. In Bruges was brought into the world by writer/director Martin McDonaugh. He's famous for the Oscar-nominated Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, but I'd argue In Bruges is better. At the very least, it's not a movie you're likely to forget - Jacqui Dent

Director: Martin McDonaugh | Cast: Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Clémence Poésy, Ralph Fiennes | Language: English | Rating: MA15+

Genre: What just happened?

The Dark Knight

Best movies on Binge - The Dark Knight

Alex's analysis: Not just a great comic book movie, a great movie full stop.

Alex's rating:

The Dark Knight feels like less of a superhero movie, and more of a neo-noir. Sure, there's still spectacular action set pieces, but the stakes are almost entirely personal. There's no improbable "the whole world is at stake" nonsense, grounding the film firmly in reality. Which is impressive, given that it's literally about a man in a bat costume and a psychopathic clown. The Dark Knight was arguably the first superhero movie for adults, and one - that in my opinion - has yet to be surpassed - Alex Choros

Director: Christoper Nolan | Cast: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal | Language: English | Rating: M

Get Out

The best movies on Binge - Get Out

Jacqui's gist: It may be a horror movie exploring contemporary racism but don't get too serious, Get Out is unashamedly fun and weird.

Jacqui's rating:

When Chris travels to Upstate New York to meet his white girlfriend's parents, he notices something very strange about the African Americans of the neighbourhood. There's something a little Stepford-wife about - they're just too smiley. It's hella creepy and pretty soon he realises he has to ...get out. An Oscar-winner for best screenplay, Get Out is a really fun way to think about the insidious ways racism still exists in Western society - Jacqui Dent

Inglourious Basterds

Best movies on Amazon Prime Video Australia: Inglourious Basterds

Jacqui's gist: One of the most satisfying World War II movies ever made.

Jacqui's rating:

In one of Quentin Tarantino's finest features, Brad Pitt leads a team of guerrilla soldiers behind enemy lines during World War II. Their one mission: to kill Nazis. Or more specifically, to terrify Nazis by brutally killing as many as possible. The "Basterds" are good at what they do and eventually graduate from persecuting Hitler's troops to coming after the man himself. Revenge has never been so sweet - Jacqui Dent

The Exorcist

The best movies on Binge - The Exorcist

Alex's analysis: It may be over 40 years old, but this seminal horror is still essential viewing.

Alex's rating:

The Exorcist is the definitive possession movie, and one of cinema's most influential horror flicks - for one, it was the first horror to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. It may be a tad tame and a little slow by modern horror standards, there are reports of viewers fainting and vomiting in cinemas when it was first released in '73. Despite its age, when it ramps up, The Exorcist still goes toe-to-toe with the best - Alex Choros

City of Ember

The best kids movies on Netflix Australia: City of Ember

Jacqui's gist: Dystopian adventure is rarely this much fun.

Jacqui's rating:

There's something charmingly Terry Pratchett-esque about the City of Ember. It's an underground metropolis cobbled together from the ruins of a great civilisation and run on work-around solutions, camaraderie and elbow-grease. That is, until the electrical generator become irreparably broken and food runs short. With their city facing catastrophe, two plucky teenagers discover a secret box that could hold the key to saving the day. But there are clues to be solved and meanwhile time is running out - Jacqui Dent

Mean Girls

Best movies on Netflix Australia - Mean Girls

Jacqui's gist: Fourteen years on, Tina Fey's teen comedy has become "one of the most referenced cultural products of all time online," according to The Guardian. That is so fetch.

Jacqui's rating:

If you're one of the millions of people who love Mean Girls, you don't need me to tell you why it's awesome. Just know that you can relive the magic now on Netflix. If you haven't seen Mean Girls yet, you need to get onto that. It's a ridiculously smart and funny exploration of toxic social cliques in high school. More importantly, it will help you understand all the memes and GIFs that have been going over your head for years. This is unapologetically a movie for teen girls but if you're not one, still watch it, because who says teen girl issues aren't important? - Jacqui Dent

The Road to El Dorado

The best kids movies on Netflix Australia: The Road to El Dorado

Jacqui's gist: This rapscallion adventure is an oldie but a goodie.

Jacqui's rating:

A delightful comedy about two Spanish con artists trying to hustle Aztecs out of their gold. The Road to El Dorado didn't smash the box-office on its release in 2000 but this movie has gathered a cult following thanks to its excellent wit, charm and the loveable thieves played by Kevin Kline and Sir Kenneth Branagh (if you please). It's even got an Elton John soundtrack. Watch for a tonne of swindling fun - Jacqui Dent

Paranormal Activity

The best movies on Binge - Paranormal Activity

Alex's analysis: Kinda dumb, but somehow still kinda scary. Really didn't need all those sequels though.

Alex's rating:

Strictly speaking, I don't know if I'd call Paranormal Activity a good movie; I can't watch it without giggling all the way through. It can be a bit dumb, in the way that many found footage horror movies are. But at the same time, it's one of the few horror movies that's kept me up at night, that's genuinely stressed me out when I've been trying to sleep. "Oh shit, I don't know what actually happens when I'm sleeping." While Paranormal Activity can be a bit over the shop, it's a great example of creative filmmaking on a shoestring budget, and it sure gets under your skin - Alex Choros

Hot Fuzz

The best movies on Binge: Hot Fuzz

Jacqui's gist: British humour at its best - Hot Fuzz is Simon Pegg and Nick Frost's comedy take on the cop movie.

Jacqui's rating:

When London's best cop Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) is transferred to the sleepy town of Sandford, he doesn't expect to see a lot of action. He's wrong.

Brought to you by the team behind Shaun of the DeadHot Fuzz is more than just a spoof, it's a genuinely thrilling ride complete with mystery, murder and the mother of all action show-downs. It's co-written and directed by Edgar Wright who's known for his comic-book style directing, clever dialogue and innovative take on genres. Wright, Pegg and Frost are all movie nerds and Hot Fuzz is full of homage and cameos (including Peter Jackson and Cate Blanchett) that film buffs will love spotting. Even if you don't like cop movies, you'll love Hot Fuzz - Jacqui Dent

Scott Pilgrim vs the World

Best movies on Binge - Scott Pilgrim vs the World

Alex's analysis: A quirky action rom-com with endless amounts of visual flair.

Alex's rating:

Scott Pilgrim vs the World is your typical romance story: boy meets girl, boy falls in love, boy has to defeat girl's seven evil exes. What could be more relatable? Based on the comics by Bryan Lee O'Malley and directed by Edgar Wright of Shaun of the Dead fame, Scott Pilgrim vs the World is a laugh-out-loud-funny visual extravaganza packed with geeky references. But for all the pomp, Scott Pilgrim handles a simple theme well: everyone has baggage - Alex Choros

American History X

The best movies on Binge: American History X

Tara's take: A powerful, often disturbing look at the consequences of blind hate.

Tara's rating:

Gritty and uncompromising, American History X is the story of two skinhead brothers who, after a night of violence, find themselves on wildly divergent paths. Older sibling and avowed Neo-Nazi Derek (Edward Norton) finds himself imprisoned for murder and, eventually, questioning the belief system that led to his incarceration.

All the while, his impressionable younger brother resists the help of a concerned mentor and falls further into a 'white power' lifestyle, leading to a tragic conclusion. An unflinching and violent look at modern racism, American History X isn't always a pleasant watch, but it's certainly an important one - Tara Donnelly

Director: Tony Kaye | Cast: Edward Norton, Edward Furlong, Beverly D'Angelo, Jennifer Lien | Language: English | Rating: MA 15+

Looper

The best movies on Binge - Looper

Alex's analysis: Time travel done right.

Before Rian Johnson directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi, he cut his teeth on Looper. The film is a mind-bending time travel thriller where Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a hitman tasked with killing marks from the future. His next target: his older self (Bruce Willis). Embracing paradoxes that would cause lesser films to unravel, Looper is a smart, satisfying sci-fi jaunt - Alex Choros

Adaptation

The best movies on Netflix Australia: Adaption

Joe's judgement:  From the guy who made Being John Malkovich, this movie isn’t as crazy in concept, but it is a wild ride and a real treat for film buffs.

Joe's rating:

Screenwriter Charlie Kaufmann is tasked with writing the adaptation of a New York Times best-selling novel but instead writes a movie about him struggling to write this adapted screenplay. Nicholas Cage plays both Charlie and his twin brother Donald but don't let that put you off: this isn't your standard Nic Cage movie. It's warm, moving and laugh-out-loud funny. It's also a movie filled with misdirection and interesting twists for each of the characters. It skilfully walks the tightrope between being a 'clever' movie and an entertaining one - Joe Hanlon

Director: Spike Jonze | Cast: Nicholas Cage, Meryl Streep, Chris Cooper, Tilda Swinton, Cara Seymour | Language: English | Rating: M

It

Best movies on Binge: It

Jacqui's gist: The new adaptation of the classic Stephen King novel may be the most Stephen King thing you'll ever see.

Jacqui's rating:

What could be more Stephen King than a bunch of pre-teens riding their bikes around a small American town trying to solve a mystery? That same story, but with an evil clown that wants to scare them all to death. Literally.

The new adaptation of It is the perfect combination of 80s nostalgia and horror that you were looking for to get you through life until the next season of Stranger Things. It also happens to be brilliantly shot with an incredible cast of soon-to-be stars including Sophia Lillis (Sharp Objects) and Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) - Jacqui Dent
