Succession

Alex's analysis: A great show about bad people .
Alex's rating:
Totally not a show about the Murdochs, Succession follows a dysfunctional family who own one of the world's largest media companies. While somewhat of a satire, the way in which it bounces between a black comedy about rich wankers to a family drama where you find yourself caring about characters you hate is enough to give you whiplash. Succession takes a few episodes to find its feet, but the more you watch it, the better it gets. Even if you'd want to punch half the characters in the face if you ever met them in real life - Alex Choros
Creators: Jesse Armstrong | Cast: Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Why do I hate everyone but-still keep watching?

What We Do in the Shadows

Anula's notions: "Just leave me to do my dark bidding on the internet" - Who says vampires can't be relatable AF?
Anula's rating:
This Hollywood adapation of Taika Waititi's original New Zealand based, modern vampire tale will have your baring your fangs in delight. A mismatched assortment of vampires are living together on Staten Island, sharing their nightly lives with a documentary camera crew and their ever-vigilent familiar.
21st century vampiredom isn't all coffins, capes and orgies my friends. - Anula Keenan

Game of Thrones

Jacqui's gist: You already know about Game of Thrones. The real news is that with Binge you can watch if for $10 a month.
Jacqui's rating:
Do I even need to tell you about Game of Thrones? For years now it's been a cultural phenomenon - and for good reason. The show is extremely addictive, with high production values and plot twists that continue to shock and excite the world over. Game of Thrones fans love the fact that anything could happen and anyone could die, which definitely makes for compelling viewing - if you can handle the heartbreak.
Every time a new season of Game of Thrones comes out Australia leads the world in illegal downloads, mainly because it was locked away on Foxtel's premium cable service. Now you can stream it on Binge for just $10 per month - Jacqui Dent

Battlestar Galactica

Alex's analysis: An all-time sci-fi great.
Alex's rating:
The 2004 reboot of Battlestar Galactica is easily one of the most important modern sci-fis. Despite being set in the stars, Battlestar is character driven through and through, playing out as a drama on a spaceship that tackles politics, religions, human nature, and more. And hey, the overarching narrative is pretty cool too. After an advance man-made race known as the Cylons wipe-out most of humanity, the survivors set out in search of a new home. A must watch, even if you're not normally into science fiction - Alex Choros
Creators: Ronald D. Moore | Cast: Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Katee Sackhoff, Jamie Bamber, James Callis, Tricia Helfer, Grace Park | Language: English | Rating: MA15+

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

Jacqui's gist: Extreme comedy makes extreme politics easier to stomach in this searing weekly commentary on American and world events.
Jacqui's rating:
You've
probably already encountered John Oliver's comedy take on the news. Clips of
his hilarious commentary on everyone from Donald Trump to Tony Abbott and
everything from televangelists to North Korea go viral weekly, sparking delight
and fury across the internet. But whereas YouTube will give you snippets, with
Foxtel Now you can get the full episodes in all their sweary British glory. You'll learn much and laugh hard - Jacqui Dent
Curb Your Enthusiasm

Anula's notions: It just wouldn't be Larry David if it wasn't excruciatingly painful. If you like Seinfeld and cringe-worthy moments, watch this.
Anula's rating:
Curb Your Enthusiasm follows the infamous Larry David in his menial Hollywood life. The awkward and judgmental guy is always getting himself into a pickle, which could easily be avoided if he just shut his god damn mouth.
Be ready to scream "why the **** would you say that!" and many other profanities as we trail Larry through his only somewhat dramatised, unfiltered existence - Anula Keenan

Parks and Recreation

Tara's take: If you loved The Office and like your comedy with lots of heart, Parks and Recreation is mandatory viewing.
Tara's rating:
Former Saturday Night Live star Amy Poehler is perfectly cast as Leslie Knope, the eternally hopeful, politically ambitious small-town government employee with dreams of building a park in a (literal) pit. While the short first season is a little hit-or-miss, the show really hits its stride from the second season onward, solidifying its main cast and, eventually, seeing Leslie move beyond the simple dream of park-building to something more.
With an abundance of one-liners and running jokes, and an endearing ensemble cast, there’s plenty to love about Parks and Recreation. Treat yo’self - Tara Donnelly
Creators: Greg Daniels, Michael Schur | Cast: Amy Poehler, Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza, Chris Pratt, Aziz Ansarie | Language: English | Rating: M

Westworld

Jacqui's gist: "There's no such thing as too many robot cowboys." If you agree with that statement, Westworld is for you.
Jacqui's rating:
It
sucks to be a robot if you're from Westworld. You get tortured, raped, murdered
... and then you get to do it all over again, trapped in an endless narrative
loop for the benefit of the ultra rich. That is, until your programming goes
strange and you start trying to solve a mind-bending maze, or hatch a mad plot
to escape that incidentally involve more murder, mayhem ... You get the
picture. Westworld is based on a Michael Crichton movie, and if
that name sounds familiar it's because he's the guy who brought the world Jurassic Park. If that's not proof enough
that you should watch this, throw into the mix insane plot twists, Anthony
Hopkins at his creepiest and one bad-arse robot hooker - Jacqui Dent
Creators: Jonathan Nolan, Lisa Joy | Cast: Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, James Marsdenm, Anthony Hopkins | Language: English | Rating: MA15+

Barry

Anula's notions: Actor/Waiter tropes are played out, try Actor/Hitman on for size.
Anula's rating:
Barry (Bill Hader), who kills people for a living discovers the love of acting while searching for his latest hit. He loves it so much that he's willing to pack up shop and leave his old life behind, but it turns out that life isn't done with him, and also he's not a very good actor.
This might be marketed as a comedy, but it's heart warming and wrenching at times too. - Anula Keenan

Devs

Alex's analysis: One of the 2020's best new TV shows.
Alex's rating:
An ambitious piece of speculative fiction, Devs delves into determinism through the lens of a Silicon Valley tech giant. After her boyfriend vanishes after starting work on a secretive quantum computing project, software engineer Lily Chan becomes embroiled in the mystery. While Devs can be a slow burn, it's also a satisfying puzzle box of a TV show that reveals layer and layer as you watch. And hey, it's always novel seeing Nick Offerman take on a serious role - Alex Choros
Creator: Alex Garland | Cast: Sonoya Mizuno, Nick Offerman, Jin Ha, Zach Grenier, Cailee Spaeny | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Speculative fiction

30 Rock

Jacqui's gist: An essential for fans of Tina Fey and Saturday Night Live.
Jacqui's rating:
30 Rock is ostensibly a TV show about making TV shows. But it's so much more than that. It's a show about dorks. It's a show about life. It's a show about becoming best friends with Alec Baldwin. It's a show about having it all. But most of all, it's a Tina Fey fan's dream. That's right, everyone's favourite Sarah Palin created and starred in 30 Rock, and if that sounds appealing, you must get onto it immediately. Watch it all. Watch it now. Tell your friends. That is all - Jacqui Dent
Creator: Tina Fey | Cast: Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan, Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer | Language: English | Rating: M

The Great British Bake Off

Joe's judgement: There are few TV shows in the world as relaxing to watch as The Great British Bake Off.
Joe's rating:
Reality TV shows routinely pit contestants against one another to build homes, cook meals and argue over who is the richest and most glamourous; all set to overly dramatic music and punctuated with fake explosions. Aren't we supposed to be relaxing in front of the TV?
The Great British Bake Off is the answer. The guests are competing in a baking contest, but there is zero animosity, bitching or back-stabbing. Everyone helps one another, congratulates each other's successes and sympathises when it all goes wrong. Hilarious hosts Sandy Toksvig and Noel Fielding crack jokes while the contestants crack eggs. This is real feel-good TV.
The Kettering Incident

Alex's analysis: Tasmania's answer to Twin Peaks.
Alex's rating:
A little known Australian gem, The Kettering Incident is a love letter to Twin Peaks and The X-Files that nonetheless stands on its own two feet. As with any Twin Peaks inspired piece of television, the series kicks off with the unexplained disappearance of Gillian after she and her half-sister Anna see strange lights in the sky. Fifteen years later, Anna returns to her hometown of Kettering, coinciding with the disappearance of another local girl. A haunting piece of Tasmanian gothic overflowing with Lynchian energy - Alex Choros

Big Little Lies

Jacqui's gist: People who don't usually watch domestic drama are watching Big Little Lies and loving it for its gripping narrative and frank exploration of violence against women.
Jacqui's rating:
What seems to start as a cat-fight between some rich and some not-so-rich mothers in the town of Monterey takes a darker turn that will eventually lead to a violent death. Big Little Lies features a stellar cast including Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, but what really stands out is the complex characterisation of the women. They're flawed, neurotic and sometimes even nasty. But you will be left with a profound sense of respect for all of them - Jacqui Dent
Creator: David E. Kelley | Cast: Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Alexander Skarsgård, Adam Scott | Language: English | Rating: MA15+
Genre: Domestic drama

Homeland

Tara's take: A tight and suspenseful crime-drama with an outstanding cast and plenty of cliffhanger episodes.
Tara's rating:
Claire Danes is superb as Carrie Mathison, a biploar CIA operative who jumps head-first into investigating recently-returned but potentially dangerous war hero Nicholas Brody. Carrie's obsession with proving her suspicions about Brody correct leads to some spectacularly bad decision making, culminating in a tense and gripping finale - and that's just the first season. With so much on the line in every episode, Homeland is perfect for weekend binge-watching - and with five Golden Globes and eight Emmy awards to its credit, is every bit deserving of a wider audience - Tara Donnelly
Creators: Howard Gordon, Alex Gansa | Cast: Claire Danes, Damian Lewis, Morena Baccarin, David Harewood, Diego Klattenhof | Language: English | Rating: MA 15+
Genre: Thriller/Drama
